Bitcoin spent most of the week hovering just above the price the average spot ETF buyer paid, around $81,500. On Saturday it slipped under that line, and under the roughly $80,200 average cost for treasury companies, after the US pulled embassy staff across the Gulf over Iran threats. About $404 million in long positions were liquidated in four hours, according to Glassnode data cited in the cover
The cost-basis line breaks
For weeks the $81.5K level acted like a floor for ETF holders, most of whom bought near that average. When price dipped below it on Saturday, the move wasn't gradual. The trigger was geopolitical: the US began pulling embassy staff across the Gulf as tensions with Iran escalated, and the selling hit both the ETF cost line and the treasury-company line near $80.2K.
The liquidation numbers tell the story of how crowded the long side had become. Roughly $404 million of longs were wiped out in four hours. That's the kind of flush that resets positioning, and it explains why the move felt sharper than the headline news alone would suggest.
ETF flows couldn't pick a direction
The spot ETF flows were erratic. Three days of inflows were followed by Thursday and Friday outflows, including the biggest one-day outflow since June. Yet the week still ended positive, the first net inflow week after two consecutive weeks of redemptions.
That pattern suggests buyers are present but hesitant. They'll step in on dips, then back off when headlines turn. The result is a market that looks indecisive on the surface but is quietly building a base. The $81K to $82K zone now holds a cluster of potential short liquidations, so a push back above it could accelerate quickly. Below $80K, liquidity builds again at $78K to $79K.

Strategy buys its own shares, not Bitcoin
Strategy, the largest of the treasury companies, bought only 267 BTC last week. Instead it spent about $193 million buying back its own preferred shares and enlarged that buyback program. For a company whose identity is tied to accumulating Bitcoin, that's a notable shift in capital allocation.
It doesn't mean Strategy is abandoning BTC. But it does suggest management sees better value in its own paper than in spot Bitcoin at current prices. For traders watching the treasury-company bid as a support pillar, that's worth noting.
The SpaceX and Tesla question
Reports that SpaceX and Tesla are exploring a merger put a new variable on the table. Together they reportedly hold around 30,000 BTC. If a merger happens, that Bitcoin would sit under one corporate roof, which could change how the market thinks about corporate treasury demand.
Nothing is confirmed yet. But the mere talk adds a narrative layer to a market already sensitive to large-holder behavior. For now it's a story to watch, not a number to trade.
Where the liquidity sits
The $81K to $82K region holds a significant cluster of potential short liquidations. If BTC pushes into it, those shorts could be forced to cover, accelerating a move higher. That's the upside trigger to watch.
On the downside, liquidity is building below $80K, with $78K to $79K the next area to watch if support breaks. The market is set up to catch traders on either side. The next move will likely be fast once it starts.
Reading the 59 score
The 24-hour News Score of 59 across 18 stories is neutral, leaning slightly bullish. Eleven stories were bullish, seven bearish. That's a market with no clear consensus in the coverage, which fits the price action: hover, dip, recover, repeat.
A score near 60 doesn't tell you which way price goes next. It tells you the tone of the information flow is balanced. For now, the cost-basis lines and the liquidation clusters are doing more to set the range than any single headline.
